It never occurred to them that - sure, maybe they never really had a roof and four walls but they were never, in fact, homeless. ~Chuck, a prophet. 5x22 Swan Song
Fandom: Supernatural
Subject: The Impala
Title: Never In Fact Homeless
Warning/Notes: vauge spoilers for Show in notes.

So much of Supernatural is about *traveling*. The boys are almost always in a new town, a new state, a new CASE, every episode. And throughout that ramblin’ and turmoil, the 1967 Chevy Impala has stuck by them (well, except for season seven. extenuating circumstances.) Affectionately she is known as “The Impala” and “Metallicar” and “Baby” by the fandom. And she is a ‘she’. A beautiful, funky, and intimidating ‘she’.
But she is also a home. The Winchesters, whose family is shattered far too early, they carry their home with them (like turtles!). It can even be argued that she becomes the main female presence in their lives. The Impala protects and shelters the boys, but at the same time needs to be cared for and pampered (which she obviously is).
Plus, she saved the world.
What follows is a mix about home and traveling. The two concepts are linked SO MUCH on this show, it’s hard to separate. Hope you enjoy! (and as always. let me know if something isn't working)
And a house is not a home
When there's no one there to hold you tight
And no one there you can kiss goodnight
Woah girl
Loosing Mary. The Mother of the family. But becomes a love song to the ‘woman’ who may, if not take her place, at least helped fill the hole
o2. House Where Nobody Lives – tom waits
Once it held laughter
Once it held dreams
Did they throw it away?
Did they know what it means?
Lawrence, Kansas. Once upon a time, this could have been home to the Winchesters. But then there was a Yellow Eyed Demon and a deal and a fire. And the boys started their life on the road.
o3. I’ve Been Everywhere – johnny cash
And so I climbed into the cab and then I settled down inside.
He asked me if I'd seen a road with so much dust and sand.
And I said, "Listen, I've traveled every road in this here land!"
I've been everywhere, man.
They roam and ramble and travel. I’d like to think that Dean has taken it upon himself to visit every place listed in this song :P
o4. Walk 500 Miles – tom barry
I'm tired of being this tired
Gone from growth to resent a fool without hope
But I won't be here when you get home
Yeah this house will be as empty as holes
John Winchester. Post Mary. Post giving Dean the Impala. He’s just a lonely man out for revenge. Revenge that separates him from his boys.
o5. Ramblin Man – allman brothers
And he wound up on the wrong end of a gun
And I was born in the back seat of a ... Greyhound bus
Rollin' down Highway 41
Lord, I was born a ramblin' man
This song screams Dean and the Impala to me. I mean, come on, Dean’s Heaven is his car, the open road, and his brother. If that doesn’t scream ‘home on the road’ to you, I don’t what will.
o6. A House is Not a Motel – love
At my house I've got no shackles
You can come and look if you want to
In the halls you'll see the mantles
Where the light shines dim all around you
And the streets are paved with gold
Sam Winchester. His pre-series attempt a ‘normal’ life and home. And then he gets sucked back into the life of a hunter. And then he falls *so far*.
o7. Toys in the Attic – aerosmith
Leaving the things that are real behind
Leaving the things that you love from mind
All of the things that you learned from fears
Nothing is left for the years
The legos. The army man. The initals. Sam and Dean grew up in the backseat of this car. It protected and sheltered them. And the remains of that childhood? So important.
o8. Rock of Ages (Live) – def leppard
Rock of ages, rock of ages
Still rollin', rock'n'rollin'
We got the power, got the glory
Just say you need it and if you need it
Say yeah!
The Impala SAVED THE WORLD. She, and the history the Winchesters share with her, managed to give Sam the strength to fight off Lucifer, if even for a moment. And shamelessly stolen from that scene. BECAUSE IT IS EPIC.
o9. We Are Young – glee cast
Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let’s raise a cup
‘Cause I found someone to carry me home
Cause she is always there. Like a turtle carries its home, the Winchesters travel with theirs.
1o. Wheels of Steel – saxon
I've got a 68 Chevy with pipes on the side
You know she's my idea of beauty, that's what I drive
She's got wheels, wheels of steel
mmm. An ode to motor vehicles. If this was about a ’67 Chevy instead of a ‘68 life would be perfect.
