The 101 fic kinks meme. Come see more about my reading habits then you probably ever wanted too!
1. Time travel. I like all the theories of time travel. I like it when the traveler makes a new timeline (good or bad). I like it when the traveler was predestined to go back/forward and nothing has changed. And I like it when the travel creates a new timeline.
2. Unraveling the new timeline. When someone has traveled in time, come back and things are different. Then just a couple people know that everything is WRONG! and try to set it right. Shenanigans, conflicting personality types and philosophical discussions of whether they should change things even more are a plus.
3. Protecting the new timeline. Things are BETTER, and only a couple of people know about it. They have to keep it going.
4. Meeting your younger self. DO THEY KNOW? What do you say to them? Is there sex (just how narcissistic are you?)
5. Non-linear narratives. Stories that jump back and forth between 'then' and 'now' to show character growth (or regression?)
6. AUs. Put them in a new world/job/race/time? Awesome! How does that effect the story? Just the tools they use, or does it change their ideas?
7. Always-a-girl!AUs. Not just transposing the pronouns. But the character is DIFFERENT, because zir is DIFFERENT. Zir has had different experiences, interactions, beliefs, etc in the different gender.
8. Defying gender norms. The Western Anthology Tin Star has a story about one of the first female police officers in the United States. Generally relegated to cleaning and note taking, but hey! She did it!
9. Crossdressing. Either way, but there is not enough drag king fiction in the world. Perhaps it's not flashy enough? Oh and I prefer it when drag artist is NOT trans*. That's a whole other thing. Crossdressing for the experience, or for pleasure (or historically for acting a part). Fraser on Due South who EMBRACES his short time as a crossdressed female is the ideal.
10. Cravats (and neckties and bowties). On men or women. The process of tying them round the neck (even played for laughs. See George Darling in Peter Pan). Grabbing and pulling and towing someone by the cravat. Tying up or blindfolding.
11. Hats. Specifically broad-brimmed hats (not so much baseball hats). Top hats, bowlers, Stetsons, fedoras, straw hats, summer hats, newsboy, church hats, etc.
12. Bare feet. Digging into carpet or sand. Foot massages. Using the foot as a hand (pick up a pen, knock on a door, adjust the taps in the bath).
13. A single tight bracelet (or wristband if you're John Sheppard). Man or Woman. Fiddling with them as a nervous tic.
14. Someone wearing a suit well. Or part of a suit. They just OWN it like a boss.
15. Suspenders
16. Women in men's oversized business shirts and nothing else
17. Skin tight leather pants
18. Boxy leather jackets on men
19. Knee high boots
20. headbands
21. A character's distinguishing article of clothing.
22. Weapons inherited from a relative. Well worn and well cared for. Not necessarily magical/powerful. Just comforting.
23. Scenes of equipment cleaning, sharping, breakdown, etc.
24. Shields. Especially as blunt instruments.
25. Proper & detailed archery form.
26. Not being weapon proficient at first, but working hard and not realizing that you're suddenly badass. See Alanna with a sword, Kel with a lance.
27. Details of forms and katas.
28. Realistic and detailed fight scenes (oh how I wish I could write those)
29. Alcohol poured over wounds post-fight. Bonus if there is a swig of alcohol too.
30. Side sleepers.
31. Puppy piles. Especially adults in a pile. Unrelated adults.
32. Hair ruffling and handsy people.
33. Found families. Found in adulthood or late teens.
34. Adopted families. Where everything is cool, and the kid isn't OMG MY LIFE SUCKS when they find out.
35. Parental figure is related, but may be aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc. AND EVERTHING IS OKAY.
36. Divorced Bio-parents and step-parents that get along. It takes a village to raise a child.
37. Young kids with older, unrelated, role model. Scouts, cousins, friend of the family's kid, etc. Older kid isn't forced to spend time with younger, and actually wants to.
38. Close father-daughter relationships
39. Coworkers as close as family members
40. Dragging a not!signigficant other home for the holidays (gen)
41. And then actually realizing that there are feelings on both sides (romance)
42. Trying to keep silent, giggly, romantic, horribly bad, sex. In childhood bedroom and/or within earshot of parents
43. Pretending to be married.
44. Setting up a house/memories for the pretending to be married scene.
45. Former lovers meet again. And now can be friends.
46. Former lovers meet again. And rekindle their relationship.
47. Soulmates. Characters that are DESTINED to be together and the story is all about their issues getting there. Names written on wrist and that sort of thing.
48. Mentioning the red cord of soulmates theory.
49. Soulbonding fic
50. Curtain fic. ANGSTY curtain fic
51. 10/20 years in the future domestic fic
52. Trapped in a room. And not necessarily for sex. Also for grudging friend-enemies to get closer/find common ground.
53. Unexplained in-jokes between friends or family ("You and I remember Budapest very differently")
54. Hearing just the (ridiculous) punch line
55. Well written character voices. So much so you can hear the actor saying it as you read.
56. Walk-and-talk. Characters who can get shit done and have complex conversations at the same time
57. Snappy, snarky dialogue. Dashel Hammet.
58. Detailed actions. Not fight scenes, just detail about what the character is doing at that point in time
59. Details of puberty. How much it sucks, sex-ed to pre-teens, angst, etc.
60. Level-headed, not for laughs, technical, discussion of menstrual cycle between male and/or female characters.
61. Level-headed, not for laughs, technical, discussion of arousal (male or female) between male and/or female characters.
62. Men finding tampons/pads in their jackets because they've lent their clothes out to female friends. Only seen this once in a BtVS fic. AWESOME.
63. Characters comfortable in their sexuality. And not just effeminate characters. Heterosexual males who are TOTALLY comfortable with LBGT characters
64. Platonic life partners. Maybe they're old and don't have active sex lives. Maybe they're asexual. Maybe they're not attracted to the sex of their partner. They just are living in each others back pocket (don't necessarily have to live together)
65. Threesomes, foursomes and moresomes. Orgies are cool, healthy relationships are better.
66. Co-op living
67. Men knitting or sewing
68. Detailed cooking scenes. The Sentinel Fandom is really good about this. There's even a cookbook!
69. Detailed eating scenes, hitting all the senses.
70. Breakfast/meal in bed
71. Food in sex scenes. Less 'let me spill this on myself', more sensuality of food. Blindfolded and being fed nibbles of things is perfect.
72. Detailed mixology
73. Coffeshop AUs. Especially when not at a starbucks, and the coffee making is detailed and loving. Quality coffee (and I have yet to find, but here's hoping)
74. Road trips. Seeing the sights, especially the lesser known/cheap attractions
75. Proper and accurate navigation. Sea charts, driving maps, verbal directions, computations on a ships computer, etc.
76. turn-by-turn directions having serious problems
77. Storm chasing
78. Characters being fannish (attending cons, writing fic, etc)
79. Characters actively and CORRECTLY using technology of the period. So modern era has cellphones, texting, tumblr, internet. 80s has boomboxes, payphones, walkmans, etc.
80. Pre-cell phone era detectives/reporters/whoever: being in a bar/restaurant and having a call come in on the house phone. Phones brought out to tables. Using payphones
81. Accents/dialects portrayed in dialogue. DONE WELL. and if you do it for one you must do it for all *point to Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn*
